Sequoia, Khosla, YC Lead 2026 Unicorn Investors
Through Aug. 15, 250 companies reached unicorn status, up from 193 companies in 2025, according to Crunchbase News. Leading sectors were robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure and AI deployment. Of these companies, 139 are U.S.-headquartered and 47 are based in China.
Funding and Deal Timing
Seventy-five percent of the $98 billion raised by these companies, or $74 billion, occurred in 2026. Thirty percent of deals, totaling 329 rounds, closed in 2026. Most earlier rounds took place before 2026, with seed rounds beginning in 2012, Series A rounds in 2014 and Series B rounds in 2017.
Top Investors by Count
The ten most active investors by number of investments were Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst and BoxGroup, according to Crunchbase News. Y Combinator was the sole accelerator and BoxGroup the only dedicated seed firm on the list. HSG, formerly Sequoia Capital China, was the leading Asia-based investor. Valor Equity Partners and Thrive Capital appeared among private equity participants, while Nvidia and NVentures represented corporate venture capital.
Seed and Series A Activity
Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital recorded the highest counts of seed investments at $20 million or less. BoxGroup placed third in seed count. Soma Capital backed five companies at seed, while South Park Commons, Lux Capital and Founders Fund each backed four. Lux Capital and Founders Fund shared three of those four portfolio companies. In Series A rounds, Andreessen Horowitz led, with Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital and Sequoia Capital each recording six investments. Series A sizes ranged from $6 million to $500 million.
Portfolio Patterns
Firms with early-stage access and continued follow-on capacity showed the largest portfolios in the 2026 unicorn cohort, according to Crunchbase News.
