Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator lead investments in the 250 companies that reached unicorn status through Aug. 15.

Sequoia Capital Tops 2026 Unicorn Investor List

Through Aug. 15, 250 companies reached unicorn status, up from 193 companies in 2025. Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator rank as the most active investors in this cohort according to Crunchbase News.

Funding Totals and Timing

Companies in the 2026 cohort raised $98 billion in total funding. Of that amount, $74 billion, or 75 percent, came in 2026. The group completed 329 deals in 2026, the highest yearly count recorded.

Seed rounds for these companies began as early as 2012, Series A rounds in 2014 and Series B rounds in 2017. Deal pace increased after 2024.

Geographic and Sector Breakdown

Of the 250 companies, 139, or 56 percent, are headquartered in the United States. Forty-seven companies, or 19 percent, are based in China. Leading sectors include robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure and AI deployment.

Most Active Investors

The ten most active investors by number of investments are Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst and BoxGroup according to Crunchbase News.

Y Combinator recorded the largest seed portfolio among accelerators. BoxGroup placed third in seed investments despite smaller fund sizes. Lux Capital and Founders Fund each backed four seed-stage companies and shared three portfolio companies. Andreessen Horowitz led Series A rounds, while Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital and Sequoia Capital each recorded six Series A investments.

HSG appears as the leading Asia-based investor. Valor Equity Partners, Thrive Capital, Nvidia and NVentures also rank among the 29 most active firms. Series A round sizes ranged from $6 million to $500 million.

Portfolio Patterns

Multistage firms with early-stage access hold the largest portfolios in the cohort according to Crunchbase News. Only a limited number of accelerators, seed specialists, corporate venture arms, private equity firms and Asia-based investors entered the top group.
