Sequoia, Khosla and Y Combinator Lead 2026 Unicorn Investors
Through Aug. 15, 250 companies joined the unicorn ranks in 2026, up from 193 companies in 2025, according to Crunchbase News. Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator rank as the most active investors in this cohort.
Funding and Deal Trends
Seventy-five percent of funding for these companies, totaling $74 billion out of $98 billion, occurred in 2026. Thirty percent of deals, or 329 rounds, closed in 2026. Most deals took place in prior years, with seed rounds dating to 2012, Series A rounds to 2014 and Series B rounds to 2017.
Geographic and Sector Breakdown
Of the 250 companies, 139 (56%) are U.S.-headquartered and 47 (19%) are based in China. Leading sectors include robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure and AI deployment.
Investor Rankings and Activity
The top 10 most active investors by investment count are Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst and BoxGroup, according to Crunchbase News. Y Combinator is the only accelerator and BoxGroup the only seed specialist in the group. HSG, formerly Sequoia Capital China, is the leading Asia-based investor. Valor Equity Partners and Thrive Capital appear among private equity firms, while Nvidia and NVentures represent corporate venture capital.
Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital hold the largest seed portfolios with investments of $20 million or less. BoxGroup ranks third in seed count. Soma Capital backed five companies at seed, while South Park Commons, Lux Capital and Founders Fund each backed four. Lux Capital and Founders Fund share three portfolio companies. Andreessen Horowitz leads Series A activity, with Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital and Sequoia Capital each recording six investments. Series A round sizes range from $6 million to $500 million.
