Sequoia Capital Tops Investors in 2026 Unicorn Cohort

Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator lead the most active investors in the 250 companies that reached unicorn status by Aug. 15, 2026.

Sequoia Capital Tops Investors in 2026 Unicorn Cohort

Two hundred fifty companies joined the unicorn ranks through Aug. 15, according to Crunchbase News. This total exceeds the 193 companies that reached unicorn status in 2025. Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator rank as the three most active investors in this cohort.

Funding and Deal Timing

Seventy-five percent of the $98 billion raised by these companies arrived in 2026, totaling $74 billion. Thirty percent of the deals, or 329 rounds, closed in 2026. Seed rounds for the cohort began as early as 2012, Series A rounds in 2014 and Series B rounds in 2017, with activity accelerating after 2024.

Geographic and Sector Breakdown

One hundred thirty-nine companies, or 56 percent, are headquartered in the United States. Forty-seven companies, or 19 percent, are based in China. Leading sectors include robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure and AI deployment.

Top Investor List and Stage Activity

The ten most active investors by count are Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst and BoxGroup, according to Crunchbase News. Y Combinator is the sole accelerator on the list. BoxGroup is the only dedicated seed firm in the top ten. HSG appears as the leading Asia-based investor among the broader group of 29 active firms. Nvidia and NVentures represent corporate venture capital on the list. Valor Equity Partners and Thrive Capital are the private equity firms included.

Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital recorded the highest counts of seed investments at $20 million or less. BoxGroup placed third in seed count despite smaller fund sizes. Soma Capital recorded five seed investments. South Park Commons, Lux Capital and Founders Fund each recorded four seed investments. Lux Capital and Founders Fund share three portfolio companies.

Andreessen Horowitz leads Series A activity. Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital and Sequoia Capital each recorded six Series A investments. Series A round sizes ranged from $6 million to $500 million.
