Sequoia Capital and Khosla Ventures Lead 2026 Unicorn Investors

Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator rank as the most active investors in companies that reached unicorn status through Aug. 15, 2026.

Sequoia Capital and Khosla Ventures Lead 2026 Unicorn Investors

So far in 2026, 250 companies joined the unicorn ranks through Aug. 15, compared with 193 companies in 2025. The most active investors in this cohort are Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator.

Funding Volume and Deal Timing

Seventy-five percent of the $98 billion raised by these companies, or $74 billion, came in 2026. Thirty percent of the deals, totaling 329 rounds, closed in 2026. The remaining deals occurred in prior years, with seed rounds dating back to 2012, Series A rounds to 2014 and Series B rounds to 2017.

Geographic and Sector Distribution

Of the 250 companies, 139, or 56 percent, are headquartered in the United States and 47, or 19 percent, are based in China. Leading sectors include robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure and AI deployment.

Top Investors by Count

The ten most active investors by investment count are Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst and BoxGroup, according to Crunchbase News. Y Combinator is the only accelerator on the list and BoxGroup is the only seed-focused firm. HSG, formerly Sequoia Capital China, is the leading Asia-based investor among the 29 firms tracked.

Private equity firms Valor Equity Partners and Thrive Capital also appear on the list. Corporate venture arms Google Ventures, Nvidia and NVentures are included as well.

Seed and Series A Activity

Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital recorded the highest counts of seed investments of $20 million or less. BoxGroup placed third in seed count. Soma Capital backed five companies at seed, while South Park Commons, Lux Capital and Founders Fund each backed four. Lux Capital and Founders Fund share three portfolio companies.

Andreessen Horowitz led in Series A investments, with Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital and Sequoia Capital each recording six. Series A round sizes ranged from $6 million to $500 million.

According to Crunchbase News, established multistage firms hold the largest portfolios in the 2026 unicorn cohort, while a smaller number of accelerators, seed specialists, corporate investors, private equity firms and Asia-based investors also rank among the leaders.
