Sequoia Capital Leads Investors in 2026 Unicorn Cohort

Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator rank as the most active investors in companies that reached unicorn status through Aug. 15.

Sequoia Capital Leads Investors in 2026 Unicorn Cohort

So far this year, 250 companies joined the unicorn ranks through Aug. 15, up from 193 companies in 2025, according to Crunchbase News. The leading sectors were robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure, and AI deployment.

Of the companies, 139 (56%) are U.S.-headquartered and 47 (19%) are from China. A total of $74 billion out of $98 billion in funding came in 2026, representing 75% of all funding for the cohort.

Investor Rankings

The top 10 most active investors by investment count are Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and BoxGroup, according to Crunchbase News. Y Combinator is the only accelerator and BoxGroup is the only seed investor on the list. HSG, formerly Sequoia Capital China, is the notable Asia-based investor among the leading group of 29 firms. Private equity firms Valor Equity Partners and Thrive Capital appear on the list, along with corporate investors Nvidia and NVentures.

Seed and Early-Stage Activity

Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital recorded the largest counts of seed investments of $20 million or less. BoxGroup placed third in seed portfolio company count. Soma Capital backed five companies at seed, while South Park Commons, Lux Capital and Founders Fund each backed four. Lux Capital and Founders Fund share three portfolio companies.

Series A Activity

The most active Series A lead investors are Andreessen Horowitz, with Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital and Sequoia Capital each recording six investments. Series A round sizes range from $6 million to $500 million. Larger Series A rounds were noticeable except for those led by Ant Group, Founders Fund and Bessemer Venture Partners.

Most deals for these companies occurred in prior years, with seed rounds starting in 2012, Series A in 2014 and Series B in 2017. The pace increased after 2024, with 329 deals (30% of the total) occurring in 2026.
