Sequoia and Khosla Lead Investors in 2026 Unicorn Cohort

Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and Y Combinator rank as the most active investors in the 250 companies that reached unicorn status through Aug. 15.

Sequoia and Khosla Lead Investors in 2026 Unicorn Cohort

250 companies joined the unicorn ranks through Aug. 15, up from 193 companies in 2025. Leading sectors included robotics, AI labs, healthcare and biotech, financial services, AI infrastructure, and AI deployment. 139 companies, or 56 percent, are U.S.-headquartered and 47 companies, or 19 percent, are from China.

Funding and Deal Timing

75 percent of all funding for these companies, or $74 billion out of $98 billion, came in 2026. 30 percent of deals occurred in 2026, totaling 329 deals. Most deals took place in prior years, with seed investments starting in 2012, Series A in 2014, and Series B rounds in 2017, though the pace has picked up since 2024.

Top Investors by Count

The top 10 most active investors by investment count were Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and BoxGroup, according to Crunchbase News. Y Combinator is the only accelerator on the list and BoxGroup is the only seed investor in the top 10. HSG, formerly Sequoia Capital China, is the notable investor from Asia among the leading 29 investors. Private equity firms Valor Equity Partners and Thrive Capital appear on the list, as do corporate venture firms Nvidia and NVentures.

Seed and Series A Activity

Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital recorded the largest seed portfolio counts with investments of $20 million or less. BoxGroup posted the third-largest count of seed portfolio companies. Soma Capital had five companies at seed. South Park Commons, Lux Capital and Founders Fund each had four portfolio investments at seed. Lux Capital and Founders Fund shared three portfolio companies. The most active Series A lead investors were Andreessen Horowitz, with Khosla Ventures and Spark Capital tied with Sequoia Capital at six investments each. Series A investment sizes ranged from $6 million to $500 million.
