Seed-to-Series A Gap Persists for Black Founders
James Norman and Sean Green, co-founders of Black Operator Ventures, state that the main barrier for Black founders is raising enough capital at the seed stage to reach Series A. AI has lowered the cost of building products but not the cost of scaling operations, acquiring customers, or hiring talent required for Series A metrics. according to Crunchbase News.
Series A investors now require recurring revenue, customer retention, capital efficiency, and repeatable growth. Black founders who close partial seed rounds often lack runway to meet these milestones without repeated fundraising.
Oversubscribed Seed Rounds Viewed as Advantage
Norman and Green note that oversubscribed seed rounds provide additional capital for execution without frequent returns to the market. They add that capital efficiency matters most when paired with sufficient funding to pursue growth. The article states that closing the Series A gap requires founders to secure enough money early to demonstrate the metrics institutional investors expect.
