Sapphire Ventures Partner Discusses AI Valuation Gap and 2026 IPO Outlook
Sapphire Ventures partner Anders Ranum addressed the divergence between public market software multiples at decade lows and private AI startup valuations at record highs in an interview with Crunchbase News.
Ranum has spent nearly 15 years at Sapphire Ventures focusing on B2B enterprise software, security, and industrial infrastructure. Before joining the firm he spent 12 years in product management and strategy at SAP. His recent investments include LangChain, WorkOS, and Tractian.
Valuation Metrics Under Scrutiny
Public market software multiples have declined due to AI disruption concerns while private AI valuations have reached new highs, according to Crunchbase News. Ranum stated that gross margins, free cash flow, and net revenue retention have improved at companies building enterprise value. He noted that net revenue retention remains relevant as a lagging indicator but places greater emphasis on whether switching costs would disrupt operations.
M&A and IPO Activity
Software M&A deal value rose 40 percent year over year to $334 billion across 678 transactions in 2025. Sapphire Ventures recorded more than half a dozen acquisitions in its portfolio over the past six months. Ranum expects 2026 to feature major tech IPOs including SpaceX, which has gone public, Anthropic, which has filed, and OpenAI, which is reportedly set to file soon, according to the Crunchbase News interview.
Companies meeting higher thresholds may delay IPOs into 2027 or later and must demonstrate margins alongside revenue growth. Secondary markets provide additional flexibility during extended private periods.
AI Integration Requirements
Ranum described the current environment as a “show me” era in which investors require evidence of free cash flow, paths to profitability, and actual AI monetization rather than claims of integration. He characterized successful approaches as AI plus SaaS rather than a replacement of traditional software categories, according to Crunchbase News.
The interview covered enterprise demand signals on factory floors and shifts in how net revenue retention is evaluated for durable value creation.
