Methodology

Benchmarks shown are approximate ranges derived from publicly available industry data, including the Bain Global Private Equity Report, Cambridge Associates public benchmark summaries, and Preqin Quarterly Updates.

Vintage years are grouped into ranges (2015-2017, 2018-2019, 2020-2021, 2022-2024) because quartile boundaries shift gradually and individual-year data is typically behind proprietary paywalls. Geography adjustments are rough approximations: Europe funds tend to run slightly lower IRR and TVPI relative to North American peers, while Asia sits in between.

Quartile determination: Q1 means your metric meets or exceeds the top-quartile threshold. Q2 means you are at or above the median. Q3 means you are at or above the third-quartile boundary. Q4 means you fall below Q3.

Actual quartile boundaries vary by data provider, methodology (pooled vs. horizon), and reporting date. This tool is for directional guidance, not precise ranking. For funds with unusual cash flow timing, consider also running your numbers through the MOIC to IRR calculator to cross-check return metrics.

Data sources: Bain Global Private Equity Report, Cambridge Associates benchmarks (public summaries), Preqin Quarterly Updates. Benchmark ranges shown are approximations derived from publicly available industry data and may differ from proprietary databases.
