Carlyle has agreed to acquire an approximately $7.7bn portfolio of unsecured personal loans from US bank Truist Financial, according to Private Equity Wire. The transaction is described as expanding Carlyle’s asset-backed finance activities.

Portfolio details

The portfolio comprises primarily seasoned, fixed-rate loans to prime and super-prime borrowers, according to Private Equity Wire. Repayments are structured to amortise the outstanding balances over time.

Akhil Bansal, Partner and Head of Asset-Backed Finance at Carlyle, said: “Banks are increasingly turning to private capital to help manage their balance sheets, and this transaction reflects the scale and specialised underwriting capabilities that Carlyle’s asset-backed finance platform brings to those relationships.” Bansal also said: “It underscores our ability to commit capital and execute at scale, and our conviction in high-quality consumer credit as a core part of the asset-backed finance opportunity.”

Carlyle platform and lead team

The deal will be led by Carlyle’s Asset-Backed Finance team within its Global Credit platform, according to Private Equity Wire. Carlyle’s Global Credit platform managed approximately $211bn in assets as of 30 June, 2026.

The strategy provides financing solutions to businesses and financial institutions and acquires portfolios of loans and other financial assets.

Timing and closing conditions

Completion is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions, according to Private Equity Wire.
