Aldaron, a newly established private equity firm founded by former executives from Palantir and Carlyle, has closed its debut fund with approximately $885m in commitments, according to Private Equity Wire. The fundraising brings Aldaron’s total assets under management to nearly $1bn, according to Private Equity Wire.

Debut fund close and AI value-creation focus

Aldaron’s strategy is focused on using artificial intelligence to increase revenues and improve operations at portfolio companies, according to Private Equity Wire. Private Equity Wire reports that the fund close was described in a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Founders and prior roles

Aldaron was founded by Jay Grewal, Evan Mendez and Will Oberndorf, according to Private Equity Wire. Grewal previously co-founded Palantir’s commercial business and led more than 600 engineers there, Private Equity Wire reports. Mendez worked on US technology buyouts at Carlyle, according to Private Equity Wire. Oberndorf previously led private markets investments at his family’s investment office, according to Private Equity Wire.

Target profile: US businesses at $200m to $1bn enterprise value

Aldaron targets US businesses with enterprise values between $200m and $1bn, according to Private Equity Wire. Private Equity Wire reports that Aldaron’s approach includes engineers working directly with portfolio company management teams to develop and implement AI systems.

First acquisition: majority stake in Oak Point Partners

Aldaron completed its first acquisition in March, taking a majority stake in Oak Point Partners, a business specialising in acquiring residual assets from companies, including those undergoing bankruptcy proceedings, according to Private Equity Wire. Since the acquisition, Aldaron has reportedly introduced AI tools to accelerate research and identify investment opportunities, Private Equity Wire reports.

Private Equity Wire reports that Oak Point now identifies 10 to 12 potential transactions each week, compared with one or two previously. Oak Point reportedly expects revenues to increase as much as fivefold over the next four to five years, according to Private Equity Wire. Since March, Oak Point’s workforce has grown by approximately 20% to 75 employees, with plans to reach 100 within a year, Private Equity Wire reports.

Aldaron has 12 employees, and half are engineers, according to Private Equity Wire. Private Equity Wire reports that the firm’s strategy prioritises revenue growth and operational expansion rather than workforce reductions, reflecting increasing interest among private equity managers in using AI as a value creation tool.

Widely known context: Palantir is a software company associated with data analytics and AI-enabled tooling, and Carlyle is a large global alternative asset manager.
