Throne Science Raises $10M Series A Led by Will Ventures
Throne Science raised $10 million in a Series A round led by Will Ventures. Emerson Collective, Workshop, LEAD VC, Salt VC, Accomplice, Moxxie Ventures and several other investors participated. The round brings total funding to nearly $18 million since the company’s 2023 inception, according to Crunchbase News.
Company Background and Founders
Throne Science was founded in 2023 by CEO Scott Hickle, CTO Tim Blumberg and chief product officer John Capodilupo. Capodilupo previously served as co-founder and CTO of Whoop and has ulcerative colitis. Hickle previously worked nearly a decade in software product management. The company develops an AI-powered toilet camera that tracks gut health and hydration.
Technology and Product Features
Throne uses a pipeline of a dozen computer vision models, some trained by practicing gastroenterologists, to analyze stool and urine characteristics. The company introduced a beta version of its Gut Health AI coach earlier this month. The coach uses LLMs to interview users after episodes of bad gut health and identify factors linked to poor or good gut health days. Throne sells directly to consumers while exploring sales through clinicians and academic or pharmaceutical research use cases.
Clinical Validation and Future Goals
Throne was accepted to present an academic abstract showing its visual AI assesses stool form with accuracy comparable to board-certified gastroenterologists. Validation studies with researchers at Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of Chicago are underway. The company added gastroenterologists and colorectal cancer experts Dr. Fola May and Dr. Aasma Shaukat as medical advisers. Throne’s longer-term goal is an at-home system to identify early warning signs of colorectal, bladder and kidney cancers, according to Crunchbase News.
Market Context
The device competes with Kohler’s Dekoda toilet-mounted health tracker. Will Ventures managing partner Ben Gardner noted the opportunity reflects broader adoption of passive health monitoring.
